Liga Insular de Orientación Lanzarote
A school-age orienteering league of five afternoon rounds between 29 March and 19 April 2026 in northern Lanzarote. The best three races count and the island team is picked from it.
Event information
About the league
The Liga Insular de Orientación Lanzarote is not a one off race: it is five rounds spread between 29 March and 19 April 2026, with an overall standing carried from one to the next. It is run by Club Deportivo Pensar y Correr Lanzarote, known as Lanz-O, in coordination with the island sports service of the Cabildo.
It is a school-age competition. Children and teenagers living in Lanzarote and La Graciosa can take part, either individually or representing a school, a club or an association. And it is more than a league: the top two of each sex in the infantil and cadete groups earn a place in the island team for the 42nd Canary Islands School Games, with third and fourth places decided by the technical staff.
2026 calendar and venues
Every round was held in the afternoon, between 16:00 and 20:00. The venues were published by the Cabildo, with the rules warning that they were provisional:
- Sunday 29 March: Máguez, Montaña Los Llanos
- Saturday 11 April: Guatiza, Barranco de Teguereste
- Sunday 12 April: Guinate, Las Calderetas
- Saturday 18 April: Órzola, Valle Grande
- Sunday 19 April: Haría, Castillejos and La Faja
Four of the five are in the municipality of Haría; Guatiza belongs to Teguise. The rules do not publish course lengths: in orienteering they change with the terrain and the age group.
How the scoring works
The winner of each race takes 1,000 points and everyone else scores in proportion to their time, using winner’s time divided by runner’s time multiplied by 1,000. Anyone who starts scores at least 200 points, even after a retirement or a card error.
The overall standing adds up the best three races out of five, so you can miss two and stay in contention. Watch the other side of that rule: with fewer than three rounds completed you can be left out of the island squad.
Categories and entry
Categories go by birth year, for boys and girls: infantil 2012, 2013 and 2014; cadete 2010 and 2011; juvenil 2008 and 2009.
There is no fee per round. What you need is the annual 2026 orienteering federation licence, 26.5 EUR under 20 and 47.5 EUR over 20, or a school federation insurance for a single round at 1.5 EUR. Paperwork is done five days before each race, by writing to lanzaroteorientacion@gmail.com or by WhatsApp on +34 609 55 87 34, and payment is made by bank transfer to the club account.
How it is run
Timing uses a SportIdent card, supplied by the organisers. GPS devices, distance meters and phones are banned: you run with a map, a compass and your head. The terrain in the north of the island is volcanic gravel, stone walls and ravine, so grippy shoes and covered legs save you scratches.
Trophies for the top three in each category are handed out at the closing ceremony, whose date was left open after the final round. The 2026 league standings have not been published on the Cabildo website.
