Triatlón IES Yaiza school triathlon
The biggest school sports event in the Canary Islands: over 1,250 pupils and teachers from 23 schools, from Puerto Calero to IES Yaiza. 27th edition in 2026.
Event information
About the event
The Triatlón IES Yaiza is the biggest school sports event in the Canary Islands. It started in 1995 at the Yaiza secondary school and reached its 27th edition in 2026, held on Friday 10 April with more than 1,250 students and teachers from 23 schools across three islands.
Every secondary school in Lanzarote takes part, state, private and state assisted alike, and IES Ichasagua and IES Los Cristianos from Tenerife and IES La Oliva from Fuerteventura travel over for it. The Canary Islands government awarded IES Yaiza the Viera y Clavijo distinction for this work promoting sport. It is organised by the school itself, Yaiza town council through Deportes Yaiza Municipio Activo, and the Cabildo de Lanzarote.
Course and distances
It starts in the water at Puerto Calero and finishes at the school, up in the village of Yaiza. The 2026 edition:
- Swim: 450 m open water
- Transition run: 1,200 m
- Bike: 9 km
- Run: 3,775 m
The distances are not the same every year. In 2025 the swim was 800 m, with 8.5 km on the bike and 3.5 km on foot, so check the course for each edition rather than assuming last year’s.
Who races and how to enter
There are school categories for under 20s and an over 20 category in which the teachers race. Entries are handled by the schools, not through an open platform: if your child wants to race, they sign up at school, with the PE department. No entry fee is published.
2026 winners
In the 27th edition:
- Men’s overall, under 20: Enea Cucchetti (IES Yaiza), 50:14
- Women’s overall, under 20: Elizabeth Rosa (Colegio Santa María de los Volcanes), 59:04
- Over 20: Daniel Navarro Hernández (IES Blas Cabrera), 58:01, and Jonathan A. Duarte (IES La Oliva), 58:56
The organisers published the winners only, not the second and third places.
For parents
It is raced on a school Friday in the morning, and pupils travel with their school. If you want to watch your child, you have to pick your spot, because the start and the finish are kilometres apart: the swim and the first transition are visible from the Puerto Calero promenade, next to the marina, where parking is easy; the finish is up at IES Yaiza. Getting from one to the other means driving.
The bike leg climbs from the coast inland, so the hard part comes in the second half. The official elevation gain is not published. In April the water is still cool and the wind usually picks up mid morning: pack a towel and dry clothes.
One calendar note if you are visiting: in 2026 the following Saturday, 11 April, Playa Blanca hosted the Magma Yaiza Lanzarote Triatlón, the municipality’s adult race.
