November is the month when Lanzarote changes sport. The open water season closes, the big triathlons are over until spring, and what fills the calendar is running: a mountain marathon in the north, a night race in Tinajo and four races on four consecutive days. Six events in three weekends, and the island is still warm enough to swim at the start of the month.
Here is the whole month, with what each one actually is.
Saturday 7 November: two swims and a mountain bike race
The Travesía a Nado Bahía de Playa Blanca closes the 12th Lanzarote Open Water Swimming Cup, in the bay of Playa Blanca. It carries distances from 400 metres for the youngest up to 3,000 metres, and it costs 20 EUR for seniors.
The same morning, and this is the part that confuses people every year, the Papagayo Beaches Crossing is swum along the Los Ajaches coast. It is the same event under two names: the island Cup calls it Bahía de Playa Blanca, the organiser B15 Active calls it Papagayo, and there is a single registration for both. Its long distance is 4.5 kilometres, the only swim on the island held inside a protected natural area, which matters mostly for how you get there and where you can park. Until 11 October the 4.5 km costs 45 EUR and the 1,200 m 20 EUR.
Also on the 7th, and on the 8th, the Yaiza Extremo Sur mountain bike race crosses the island from north to south. Be careful with this one: the date comes from the Canary Islands cycling federation calendar and nothing else has been published, no rules, no prices and no entry link. Its page says so, and it will change the day the organiser publishes something.
Thursday 12 to Saturday 14 November: Haría Titán
Haría Titán is the mountain race of the north and the biggest trail weekend of the month. Three days, five formats and only three of them races: 42.5 km, 22.5 km and 14.5 km, plus an inclusive 5 km hike on the Friday and the children’s Chinij@s Trail. The long race starts on the Saturday at 07:00 from the Plaza de Haría, which means head torches and a start in the dark.
Prices have been at their current level since 1 September: 48 EUR for the marathon distance, 38 EUR for the Geoparque and 28 EUR for the Trail Joven.
If you are coming to watch rather than run, Haría is the place to be: the square is the start, the finish and the centre of the whole thing, and the valley roads around it let you see the race more than once without a car chase.
Saturday 21 November: Night Run at Club La Santa
The Night Run is 4 or 7 kilometres of tarmac inside Club La Santa, run after dark with music, food trucks and most of the field in fluorescent kit. It is not a race for a personal best and it does not pretend to be. If you are already entered in the Running Challenge the following week, your Night Run entry is free.
Sunday 22 to Wednesday 25 November: Running Challenge
The Lanzarote International Running Challenge reaches its 37th edition: four races on four consecutive mornings, 49 kilometres in total across tarmac, dirt and sand. A 10 km road race, a 13 km ridge run, a 5 km beach run and a 21 km half marathon around Tinajo. You can enter a single race instead of the set.
This is the one where waiting costs money. Until 28 September one race is 32.50 EUR and all four are 105.60 EUR; from the 29th those become 40.70 and 124.30 EUR.
And a detail that pairs the two weekends: the Night Run on the 21st is free for anyone entered in at least one of the four Challenge races.
What November is actually like
The heat of the summer is gone and the wind is the thing to plan around, not the temperature: it decides how the sea feels on the 7th and how the exposed sections of the north feel the following weekend. There is a full explanation of how the trade wind works on the island in our guide to wind and sport in Lanzarote, and the practical side of getting to each start line is in transport and logistics.
One more thing worth knowing if you are planning the trip: the Lanzarote International Marathon is on 3 December, the weekend after the Running Challenge. Plenty of visitors link the two.
The full month, with every distance, price and start time, is on the Lanzarote calendar, and each race has its own page with the detail. Our listings are checked every morning against each organiser’s own website. The one thing you do have to go to their site for is entering: the payment is theirs.
