Logistics

Transport and logistics for Lanzarote events

How to move around Lanzarote during a race: car, buses, shuttles, bikes, supporters and critical timings.

Logistics can decide how you remember a race in Lanzarote. The island is not huge, but distances between Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise, Playa Blanca, Tinajo, La Santa and La Geria matter when there are road closures, bikes, early starts or supporters.

Rental car

For many races, a rental car is the most flexible option. It lets you reach registration, supermarkets, course checks and spectator points. It also helps if you travel with a bike, although you should confirm vehicle size and the rental company’s transport policy.

Problems appear during events with road closures or high demand. Do not simply put the start in your navigation app. Check the organiser’s traffic plan, recommended parking and closure times. Arrive earlier than you would on a normal day.

If you are racing an event with transition, avoid relying on parking right beside the venue. Some streets close before the race starts and certain areas may be reserved for organisers, emergency access or athlete flow. A slightly more distant parking spot, a calm walk and a clear return plan are often better than trying to squeeze into the closest possible place.

Bus and public transport

Intercity Bus Lanzarote connects many towns, the airport and tourist areas, but it does not always fit early race starts or post-race returns. It can be useful for supporters and pre-race days, especially between main towns, but check actual frequencies and do not assume night or event services.

For supporters, buses can work well when the race passes through connected towns, but they should not be the only plan for a very early start. In long events, a simple mixed plan is usually stronger: shared car to a convenient area, bus or taxi during the race and one fixed meeting point after the finish.

Organiser shuttles

Some races offer shuttles, runner collection or specific transport instructions. Wine Run, for example, publishes runner pickup and programme times. In point-to-point events or protected natural areas, using the official system usually reduces stress and avoids parking issues.

When an official shuttle exists, treat it as part of the race plan. Check where it leaves from, whether you need a wristband or race number, whether bags are allowed and what happens if you miss the final bus. For events with different start and finish areas, also confirm where your change bag goes and how you collect it.

Bike logistics

If you travel with a bike, plan assembly, bike box, tools and storage. Do not leave brake, wheel or drivetrain adjustments until the evening before. In triathlon, also calculate how to get the bike to transition and how to collect it afterwards, especially if your supporters do not have a car.

If you fly with a bike, leave spare time between arrival and race day. A delayed bike box, damaged case or loose part can take a whole afternoon to solve. If you rent a bike on the island, book before travelling and confirm size, pedals, gearing and pickup time. In Lanzarote, wind can punish an improvised position or the wrong setup quickly.

Supporters

Good logistics includes the people travelling with you. Give them timings, meeting points and a backup plan in case of poor coverage or traffic changes. In IRONMAN, trying to see everything can be more tiring than choosing two or three reliable points.

Choose spectator points that are comfortable, safe and close to shade or services if the wait will be long. For families, one easy point is often better than an ambitious route to see the athlete many times. If the course crosses rural areas, take water, a hat, a battery pack and a screenshot of the route.

Accommodation and base

Sleeping next to the start is not always the best option. For a short race it can be ideal, but for events spread across several municipalities it may be better to stay where parking, rest and supporter movement are easier. Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise, Playa Blanca, Arrecife, Tinajo or La Santa can all work depending on the event. The right base depends on start, finish, race-pack collection and transport.

If you travel with a bike or bulky equipment, ask about secure storage before booking. Apartments and villas are often easier for bike boxes and laundry; in hotels, confirm whether bikes are allowed in rooms or whether there is a specific bike room.

Critical timings

In Lanzarote, time margin matters. Many events start early to avoid heat, wind or traffic. Work backwards: breakfast, bathroom, transfer, parking, walking to the start, bag drop, GPS setup and entering the start area. If you travel with supporters, add more margin.

The afternoon before also counts. Race-pack collection, equipment checks, food shopping and finding the venue take longer than expected. Avoid testing a new restaurant, route or shoes the day before unless you really need to.

Plan B

Always have a simple plan B. Save a taxi number, the accommodation location, a map screenshot and a meeting point that does not depend on mobile coverage. If roads are closed, do not argue with volunteers or local police: their information overrides any app. For long races, split keys, documents and basic money between athlete and supporter. Good logistics is not about controlling everything; it is about making sure one surprise does not ruin the day.
