About the event

The La Tiñosa Open Water Swim was held on Saturday 1 August 2026 at the El Poril cove, in Puerto del Carmen (Tías), in its second edition. It was organised by C.D. Cuatro Elementos MD with the Servicio Insular de Deportes of the Cabildo de Lanzarote and Tías town council, as part of the Fiestas del Carmen and of the resort’s 60th anniversary, 1966 to 2026.

Its place in the calendar is what makes it matter: it was the first of the five rounds of the XII Lanzarote Open Water Swimming Cup, which runs from 1 August to 7 November 2026.

The two-buoy course

Start and finish in the El Poril cove itself, at El Varadero. Swimmers start from the water’s edge on the referee’s signal, and the finish arch stands next to the steps leading down to the cove.

The course is a triangle in the bay of La Tiñosa, between the fishing harbour and the cove: first a buoy to the north, left on your right-hand side, then a second buoy to the south, also to be passed on the right, and back to the finish.

The regulations list three distances:

• 400 m, one lap of the course, junior categories
• 800 m, two laps, junior categories
• 1,500 m, Open category

How the day went

The starts went off from the shortest distance upwards: first the 400 m, then the 800 m and finally the Open, with the prize-giving at the end of the morning. The published start times do not agree between official sources, so we are not quoting them.

There were medals for the first three in each category, men and women, and trophies for the outright winners. The regulations published the tide table for the day: low water of 0.6 m at 09:50 and 22:22, and high water of 2.5 m at 03:55 and 2.8 m at 16:10.

As of 20 August 2026 no results or participant numbers have been published on the Cabildo website, so this page carries no podiums. They will be added as soon as they appear.

What being the opening round means

The Cup is called by the Cabildo de Lanzarote through its sport department, and the La Tiñosa regulations defer entirely to the Cup rules: any breach means exclusion from the final classification.

The second round is the San Ginés Open Water Swim, on 22 August in Arrecife, run by the Real Club Náutico. Outside the Cup, the big date on the island’s open-water calendar is the El Río Open Water Swim, on 19 September between Lanzarote and La Graciosa.

For the next edition

The whole cove is visible from the promenade and from the steps down to the water, which makes this one of the easiest swims on the island to follow from dry land: start, buoys and finish all fit in one view.
