César Vera won the first Triatlón Lanzarote on Saturday 14 March 2026 in Costa Teguise, clocking 1:07:32 over the sprint distance, three seconds clear of Britain’s Jorge Carlos Wilkes. The women’s race went to Morocco’s Ghislane Assou in 1:19:59. Three hundred competitors passed through Las Cucharas beach in the morning’s age-group races, the opening round of the 2026 Canary Islands triathlon series.
The top three men finished within eighteen seconds: Vera in 1:07:32, Wilkes in 1:07:35 and Yerove Rodríguez in 1:07:50, so the podium was settled on the run and not on the bike. The women’s margin was wider: Assou took a minute and twenty-four seconds out of Sarah Kim Bonner.
Sprint, men’s podium
| Pos. | Athlete | Country | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | César Vera | Spain | 1:07:32 |
| 2 | Jorge Carlos Wilkes | United Kingdom | 1:07:35 |
| 3 | Yerove Rodríguez Machín | Spain | 1:07:50 |
Sprint, women’s podium
| Pos. | Athlete | Country | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ghislane Assou | Morocco | 1:19:59 |
| 2 | Sarah Kim Bonner | not confirmed | 1:21:23 |
| 3 | Patricia García | not confirmed | 1:25:35 |
The race result and the series standings do not match. Assou won in Costa Teguise, but the athlete who left Lanzarote leading the Canary Islands series was Bonner, second across the line. There was no such split in the men’s race: Vera won and heads the series.
The morning programme also included a supersprint and a youth aquathlon. In the men’s supersprint, Iker Vara, of Flor de Triatlón Platja Llarga, was fastest in 22:44, followed by Enea Cucchetti, of Sports Club Tripate, in 23:14. The women’s went to Elizabeth Rosa, of Real Club Náutico de Arrecife, in 26:37, ahead of Carla Ruiz, of CN Las Palmas. No classifications were published for the youth aquathlon.
It was not a comfortable day. The wind blew with occasional sun, the water ran with a strong current, and the gusts told on the bike leg, an urban multi-lap course along Avenida Islas Canarias.
Two separate competitions shared the venue and the day, and they are worth keeping apart. In the afternoon, on the same circuit, came the World Triathlon Cup, with around 120 elite athletes from some 30 countries. That is a different race with a different start list. The times above are from the age-group event.
The exact segment distances of the age-group sprint and supersprint are not published by any open official source, so they do not appear here. The 750 metre swim, 20 kilometre bike and 5 kilometre run that circulate are the elite format.
The island’s triathlon calendar continues with Magma Yaiza and Ocean Lava.
