Best triathlons in Lanzarote
A guide to choosing a triathlon in Lanzarote by distance, experience, logistics, time of year and level of difficulty.
Updated
Choosing the best triathlon in Lanzarote depends on a more precise question: best for whom? A first-time sprint athlete does not need the same race as someone building a full year around long-distance preparation. Lanzarote has races with very different identities, and that variety is one of its strengths.
IRONMAN Lanzarote
IRONMAN Lanzarote is the long-distance reference. It is the most iconic race and also the one that demands the most preparation, money, logistics and mental margin. The swim in Puerto del Carmen may look manageable, but the day is often decided on the bike and confirmed on the marathon.
It is the best triathlon for athletes looking for a major goal, able to train for months and wanting a full international race experience. It is not the best entry point if you are still learning nutrition, windy bike handling or long hours in the saddle.
Volcano Triathlon
Volcano Triathlon at Club La Santa is the classic Olympic-distance option. It has history, a strong competitive field and compact logistics. In 2026 it brought together more than 350 athletes from 25 nationalities, according to Cadena SER Lanzarote.
It is a strong choice for triathletes who want to race hard without stepping into IRONMAN scale. It also works as a spring test for athletes preparing longer targets.
Ocean Lava Lanzarote
Ocean Lava works well for the late season and for athletes who want varied formats. Its appeal lies in combining Lanzarote’s triathlon identity with a more modular level of demand than classic long distance. If you do not want the whole year to revolve around one race, it can be a smart option.
Magma Yaiza and Costa Teguise
Magma Yaiza adds a southern-island angle, with Playa Blanca as its centre and sprint and Olympic formats. Costa Teguise, through the World Cup and its popular programme, has gained weight for short, fast and visible racing.
How to decide
If you are starting out, look for sprint or supersprint. If you already have a base and want intensity, Volcano or an Olympic race may fit. If you want the biggest goal, IRONMAN is the ceiling. If you prefer a late-season target without shaping the whole year around it, look at Ocean Lava.
Common mistakes when choosing
The most common mistake is choosing by prestige before context. IRONMAN can be unforgettable, but without months of preparation or clear family logistics, the experience becomes fragile. Another mistake is underestimating Olympic distance because it is not long: in Lanzarote, wind and exposure make even a shorter day serious. Before paying, check work calendar, budget, accommodation, bike transport and recovery afterwards. A realistic choice usually leads to better racing and more desire to come back.
